FAQ's on GST Registration

Registration is mandatory if your annual turnover exceeds the threshold limit—generally ₹40 Lakhs for businesses selling goods and ₹20 Lakhs for service providers (lower limits apply to North-Eastern and hilly states). Additionally, if you sell goods online (E-commerce), sell across state lines (Inter-state), or are a Casual Taxable Person, you must register regardless of your turnover.

The documentation depends on the business type, but generally includes:

  • PAN Card of the business or proprietor.

  • Aadhaar Card of the promoters/partners.

  • Proof of Business Address (Electricity bill, Rent Agreement, and an NOC from the owner).

  • Bank account details (Cancelled cheque or passbook).

  • Digital Signature (DSC) or Aadhaar OTP for verification.

A Regular taxpayer pays GST on sales and can claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) on purchases. A Composition dealer pays a lower, fixed percentage of their turnover as tax (e.g., 1%) but cannot claim ITC and cannot charge GST to their customers. AccountSewa helps you choose the scheme that best fits your profit margins and business model.

Yes. You can register your GST at your residential address provided you have the necessary documentation, such as an electricity bill in the owner’s name and a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the owner (even if it’s a family member) allowing the space to be used for business.

Apart from legal compliance, a GSTIN allows you to:

  • Claim Input Tax Credit, which directly reduces your tax cost.

  • Sell goods across state borders without restrictions.

  • Register on E-commerce platforms like Amazon or Flipkart.

  • Build trust with B2B clients who prefer to buy from registered dealers to claim their own tax credits.
